My Belly Button Lovin' Guy
So this week we tackle another sex problem with our resident expert Dr Karen Gurney. She's also known as @thesexdoctor on Instagram, and director of the Havelock Clinic. There is no question too big or too small for Dr Karen so get in touch if you want to share and we'll do all we can to get you an answer as soon as we can.
Hey Dr Karen,
I met a guy on tinder a couple of years ago and ended up having a bit of a fling with him for a few months. He was a great guy but he an a bit of an odd kink: bellybuttons.
I don't really have an issue with bellybuttons so I sorta just went along with it. He would put his finger in my bellybutton during sex, which at first I found very strange, but embarrassingly it kinda felt good after a few times?! I feel very weird discussing this, but I've heard that the bellybutton is an erogenous zone and even may have a connection to your vagina?! Have you experienced anything like this or heard anything,
Dr Karen Gurney says:
Thanks for writing in. You’re actually not alone in this, lots of people enjoy having their belly button touched, from mild sensitivity / experiencing it as an erogenous zone to more substantial fetishes which is called ‘alvinophilia’. Madonna actually spoke about the heightened sensitivity and erogenous capabilities of the bellybutton once in an interview which she said ‘When I stick my finger in [it], I feel a nerve in the centre of my body shoot up my spine.'
Also, a funny thing happens to us with good sex. We associate the circumstances of what we were doing (ie sex in a park, a finger in a belly button- whatever) with heightened enjoyment and arousal, so they become linked over time.
This can sometimes be how our sexual interests develop. They can start off as innocuous experiences, and then we start to enjoy them, which further heightens the sensation (things feel better the more turned on we are) and then it becomes part of our sexual tastes. It’s a really good thing as it provides us with a wide repertoire of things that work for us sexually which stops sex from getting routine.
I’m really pleased that you wrote in, and my advice would be run with it, and explore other far flung regions of your body too – who knows what else your body is capable of?
